CIPP Pipe Lining: How It Works, What It Costs, and When It Will Not Work
CIPP lining pulls a resin-saturated felt sleeve into an existing sewer pipe, inflates it against the pipe wall, and cures it into a hard, jointless pipe inside the old one. It avoids digging, but it requires a host pipe that still holds its shape and grade. A collapsed, offset, or back-pitched line cannot be lined.
Cured-in-place pipe lining, usually shortened to CIPP, is a repair method that leaves the old pipe in the ground and builds a new one inside it. For a Broward house with original cast iron under a slab, it is the difference between a crew working from two access points and a crew opening the floor of the house.
It is also oversold. The method has real limits, and the limits are structural rather than commercial.
How the process actually runs
A felt or fiberglass sleeve is saturated with a thermosetting resin, pulled or inverted into the host pipe through an existing cleanout, and inflated with air or water so it presses tight against the pipe wall. The resin then cures — with ambient heat, hot water, steam, or ultraviolet light depending on the system — and hardens into a continuous pipe with no joints. Lateral connections are reopened afterward with a robotic cutter, and the line is scoped again to confirm the finished bore.
The finished liner is typically 3 to 6 millimetres thick, so a lined 4-inch line loses a small amount of internal diameter. That reduction is usually offset by the fact that the new surface is smooth, where the cast iron it replaced was scaled and rough. Flow capacity in practice tends to be equal or better.
The whole operation on a residential lateral is normally a one- or two-day job, and the excavation is limited to access pits if no usable cleanout exists.
What has to be true before a line can be lined
This is the part that decides whether lining is even on the table, and it is settled by camera before any quote is meaningful.

A working plumber put the eligibility rule plainly in a trade forum: “You can only do trenchless if your sewer line has correct pitch and is mechanically sound.” That sentence is the whole gate. A quote for lining issued without a camera run is a quote for something nobody has confirmed is possible.
The argument against lining, which is worth hearing
The most useful criticism of lining comes from plumbers, not from customers. On the question of tree roots, one made the case directly: “If cast iron did not stop those roots what makes you think a liner will?”
The objection has force, and the honest answer is conditional. A cured liner is jointless, and roots enter through joints and cracks, so a correctly installed full-length liner removes the entry points along the section it covers. What it does not do is remove the tree, change the soil, or protect the pipe beyond the lined run — and a liner that stops short of the connection at the main leaves the most root-prone joint in the system untouched. Lining a section and calling the root problem solved is where the criticism lands, and it lands fairly.
The practical version: ask what length is being lined, where the liner starts and terminates, and what happens at the connection point. If those three answers are vague, so is the warranty.
What it costs, and why quotes vary so much
Reported South Florida figures for cast iron work run around $80 to $250 per linear foot, with whole-home cast iron replacement averaging near $10,000. Lining a residential lateral generally lands in the same territory per foot as it displaces the excavation cost rather than the pipe cost.

The variables that genuinely move the price:
- Access — whether a usable cleanout exists or access pits have to be dug
- Length and diameter of the run, and how many lateral connections need reinstating
- Pre-cleaning — heavy scale or root mass means jetting and cutting before any liner goes in
- Whether the run leaves the property line, which brings Broward County right-of-way restoration into scope
- Cure method, since UV and steam systems cost more to mobilise than ambient cure

What we do not claim about lining
Florida’s Building Code, Chapter 7, sets out an explicit path for trenchless pipe bursting: the replacement pipe must be HDPE, SDR 17, conforming to ASTM F714, and the finished section must be inspected internally by video camera survey and approved by the code official. That requirement is written into the code.
We have not verified an equivalent residential CIPP approval path in the Florida Building Code, so this page does not tell you there is one. If a permit is involved in your job, the question belongs to a Broward plans examiner, and the answer should be in writing before the resin is mixed.
